The Intellect of Donald Sutherland, 2000
Enamel, oil on canvas
48 x 48 in.
TOP HALF: From my Bumpies series which is my minimalist approach to showing layers of 'dermis' our psychology exhibits. Beneath the top veneer are unbeknownst shadow layers, which will poke, protrude and mysteriously make their presence known.
BOTTOM HALF: In the late 90s and early 00s, the esteemed Donald Sutherland was doing so many voice over commercials, akin to Morgan Freeman who is also known for his voice over work.
One set of adverts Mr. Sutherland lent his voice to was Volvo. He was the voice of reason. The smart choice. And so I made this ‘smart’ painting. And that was a thing for a short while… 'SMART’-everything… Smart cars, smart phones, etc.
Intellect of the Heart (top) vs. Retail Intellect (bottom). A PPV fight headlining in Vegas, at some point.
